Carolyn Lipovsky, La Salle University
Carolyn Lipovsky burst onto the running scene
her freshmen year in 2000 by placing 7th in the GMC Cross Country
Meet. She then went on to have one of the most successful high
school careers in county history. Her senior year she finished 1st
in the 800 & broke the 21 year old county record. She then went on
to finish 2nd in the Parochial A 800 and 9th at the State Meet of
Champions. Now at La Salle University, she has experienced instant
success at the collegiate level. Her freshmen year marked a 2nd
place finish in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 4x800 win. As a
sophomore she placed 10th in the A-10 XC meet & helped her team
win the team title.
GMCrunning: So now that you are two
years out of high school, looking back how would you describe your
high school career?
CL: It had it's ups and downs. There were high points and
low points. Being a two time County champ and breaking the 21 year
old county record in the 800 was definitely one of the highlights
of my HS career. The heartbreaking race at GMC's my senior year
was a low point.
GMCrunning: You were known for training a lot on your own
in high school especially sometimes with St Joe's since your
brother went there, what was that like?
CL: It helped so much. Chasing after those guys was so much
easier than getting out there every day on my own.
GMCrunning: How would you say your transition was from high
school running to college?
CL: Umm....The higher mileage wasn't too difficult. I would
say I adjusted pretty well and had a successful indoor and outdoor
season last year
GMCrunning: What was different in college than high school
for you?
CL: The fact that I now have a coach who is awesome and a
great team who are always there. The types of workouts changed. My
mileage went way up
GMCrunning: You've experienced a lot of success in college
thus far in only 2 years, what would you say has been your biggest
accomplishment?
CL: 2nd place at indoor a-10s last year and then coming
back to be on the winning 4x800 team and going from 63rd in XC
A-10s my freshman year to 10th this year and helping the team win
the Atlantic 10 Conference.
GMCrunning: Do you have any goals for this year?
CL: Be all conference indoors and outdoors. Qualify for
ECACs outdoors. (Carolyn qualified for ECAC's in the 1,000
indoors)
GMCrunning: Were you so close to qualifying for XC NCAA's
this year as a team, what did it feel like to be on one of the
best teams in the region & nationally?
CL: I loved the feeling of being on a team. Not making
nationals was a disappointment. It was our goal all year to
qualify for nationals and we fell short of that. We have our top 7
returning so we're going for it again next year.
GMCrunning: So far this season, it has been one for the
ages for girls distance running in New Jersey. have you been
following it at all? what are your thoughts about it?
CL: In XC there were some girls that stood out, Tauro,
Marino, Wright, the duo of Jackucewicz and Higginson, the Roxbury
team. Last year in the Outdoor Meet of Champs mile the first 8
girls were all under 5:00 that just shows the depth the state has,
not only are the leaders getting faster, the whole pack is getting
faster too
GMCrunning: What would you say is the most fun you've had
on a run?
CL: One day we decided to run to the Tasty Cakes Factory.
It smelt so good!!!
